The 1979 Warner Bros. comedy,
The In-Laws
, which was directed by Hiller, starred Falk as Vincent J. Ricardo and Libertini as crazed General Garcia. The film, which co-starred Alan Arkin and Nancy Dussault, was re-made in 2003 (Andrew Fleming directed).
Actor
PETER FALK
(1927-2011) lost an eye at the age of three, resulting in the odd, squinting gaze that later became his trademark.
Best known as the rumpled television detective, Columbo,
the character actor has also enjoyed a successful film career spanning over 40 years. He
won two Emmy Awards
for his television work, and Falk received
two Best Supporting Actor Academy Award nominations
(
Murder Inc.
, 1961 and
Pocketful of Miracles
, 1962). He published
his autobiography,
Just One More Thing
(his trademark line from
Columbo
), in 2006.
Canadian film director ARTHUR HILLER (1923-2016) made his debut in 1955 when he directed a few episodes of
Matinee Theatre
.
After directing other television anthologies such as
Playhouse 90
(1956-1958),
Alfred Hitchcock Presents
(1958-1961), and
Naked City
(1961), he moved on to feature films.
His directorial efforts include
The Americanization of Emily
(1964),
Silver Streak
(1976),
The In-Laws
(1979),
The Babe
(1992). He was nominated for an Oscar and won a Golden Globe for directing
Love Story
(1970).
Hiller's career behind the camera lasted over half of a century.
