    Description

This is one pound of oil shale collected outside the Unocal (Union Oil of California) site and may consist of more than one piece. The site has been abandoned for many years. The location is north of Parachute Colorado. Oil shale is a misnomer and is best described as a marlstone. This shale sample contains at least 10 gallons of oil, per ton of material. The site is on the Piceance Basin, which is one of the largest oil shale deposits in the world. Oil shale yields olefins and parafins, which upon distillation yields an oily material known as kerogen. The kerogen was derived essentially from plant material. When oil shale is heated with a torch, the kerogen will burn. This material is shipped in compliance with USPS Publication 52. Shipping is .50.
