    Wehrmacht vehicle blackout Nachtmarschgerät (Device for night marches)

    Wehrmacht vehicle blackout
    In combat conditions at night, light emanating from various sources is one of the main unmasking signs of the activity of troops, since it is visible from a very long distance. Suffice it to say that, for example, the flame of a cigarette is visible from a height of 500 meters, and at ground level from a distance (depending on the smoke, dustiness of the air) 200-400 meters.
    The light of car headlights of single cars is noticeable from a distance of 2 to 6 kilometers. The glow from the light of the headlights of a column of equipment in a cloudless sky is visible from a distance of up to 10-20 kilometers. Reflection on the clouds in cloudy weather is visible at a distance of up to 30 kilometers.
    From this it is clear that a lot of attention was paid to the issues of blackout, especially lighting devices of technology during the Second World War. This issue was dealt with in a particularly comprehensive and thorough manner in the Wehrmacht.
    So, the German company Nova-Technik GmbH (NOTEK), in Munich, Bavaria, at the end of the thirties designed and proposed a device that was designated in the Wehrmacht as Nachtmarschgerät (Device for night marches). The device provided satisfactory illumination of the road in front of the vehicle and significantly reduced the detection range of the light emanating from this device by the enemy.
    From the end of 1939, this device began to be massively installed on army vehicles, armored personnel carriers, and partly on tanks.
    The NOTEK device kit consisted of three main parts:
    * headlight with bracket (Tarnscheinwerfer),
    * rear light (Abstands-Rückliht),
    * mode switch (Stufenschalter).
    The headlight is mounted on a bracket at a height of 0.8-1.2 m from the ground level closer to the left edge of the machine using a bracket and a ball joint, which allows you to fine-tune its position.
    The adjustment procedure was as follows: on a fully refueled and loaded car, the height of the upper limit of the luminous flux is measured (the height from the level of the road to the headlight visor. Then a second measurement is made, at a distance of 10 meters from the car. In this case, the upper limit of the luminous flux should pass at a height of 12 cm from road level.
    The headlight is horizontally adjusted so that the light spot captures the left side of the road. This ensures safe movement at speeds up to 15 km/h.
    The light coming from the headlight is practically invisible neither from the air nor for a ground observer. Studies carried out by NOTEK have shown that an observer at road level can see a spot of light on the road from a distance of less than 50 meters.
    The headlight provides the driver with satisfactory visibility forward by 30-40 meters and left and right by 12 meters. This allows you to move at speeds up to 30-40 km / h.
    The standard headlights of cars and tanks could be used either in normal mode, or closed with devices that left a narrow gap, or closed tightly.
    Operation in the army revealed two main drawbacks of NOTEK. Firstly, the enemy could notice the light of the headlight when the car moved over bumps or crossed the top of the ascent. Secondly, the system did not provide for marker lights to determine the position of the machine (it stands in front of the observer or stern) and its side boundaries. Therefore, there have been, for example, such cases: a truck driver is driving, he sees a light spot on the road ahead from a moving vehicle and thinks that NOTEK is installed as expected - on the left wing of a car or tank. But in reality, someone decided to install the headlight in the middle of the projection of the car.
